Mice were used to investigate how well TRF (tocotrienol-rich fraction), ASA (5-aminosalicylic acid, mesalazine) and alpha-tocopherol (aTP) helped in colitis.
150 mg TRF per kg body weight was used. The TRF contained 70% tocotrienols and approx. 25% aTP.
Result: The inflammation parameters were significantly improved by both ASA and TRF - close to the level of the healthy control group. Alpha-tocopherol (aTP) alla only achieved a minimal improvement in the inflammation.
Summary:The better protective effect of tocotrienol can be explained by the preferential absorption of TRF by the intestinal mucosa. TRF improved the signs and symptoms of acute ulcerative colitis in mice by reducing local inflammation and oxidative stress.
These effects suggest that TRF could be used as a dietary supplement to maintain intestinal health as a preventive measure in ulcerative colitis patients.
(Original in English: "The superior protective effect of TRF may be attributed to the preferential absorption of TRF by the gut mucosa. TRF alleviated the signs and symptoms of acute UC in murine model via the reduction of local inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress. These effects suggested that TRF could serve as a gut health supplement for preventive measures for UC condition in patients.")
About the study:Oral Supplementation of tocotrienol-Rich Fraction Alleviates Severity of Ulcerative Colitis in Mice
The study is also available in full text and shows some very good comparison graphics that clearly show the success of the tocotrienols (and mesalazine).
Our warning: tocotrienols reduce blood clotting and thus prolong bleeding time. Only use tocotrienols if there is no bleeding.
